The basics

How do you copy and paste a symbol?

To copy and paste symbols, click any symbol in the picker above and it goes straight to your clipboard. Paste it with Ctrl+V on Windows or Cmd+V on a Mac, or touch and hold in a text field on a phone and choose Paste. To collect several symbols first, use the tray.

Every symbol here is a real Unicode character, not a picture, so it stays text that you can select, search and resize. Each one shows its official Unicode name and code, and all 1,561 are sorted into 22 categories. If you want whole words in a decorative style instead, use the fancy text generator. To turn a message into symbols, try the Wingdings translator. To style letters rather than add symbols, try the cursive text generator, strikethrough text generator or glitch text generator.

How it works

How does the symbol picker work?

Four steps, and the grid updates as you type.

01

Pick a category or search

Choose a category chip such as Hearts, Arrows or Math. Or type a word like heart, a code like U+2665, or paste a symbol to find out what it is.

02

Click or tap to copy

One click copies the symbol and adds it to the tray. Turn off Copy on click if you only want to build a string first.

03

Build a string in the tray

The tray is editable and inserts at the cursor, so you can put symbols between your own words. Delete the last symbol, clear the tray, or save it as a .txt file.

04

Check the name and code

Hover, focus or tap a symbol to see its official name, Unicode code and HTML entity, plus the CSS and JavaScript escapes. Click any of them to copy it.

Reference

Where do symbols live in Unicode?

Unicode groups characters into blocks of consecutive codes. If you know the block, you can search by code: type u+26 in the search box to list every symbol whose code starts with 26, which is the Miscellaneous Symbols block.

Why does a symbol sometimes turn into an emoji?

Some characters can be drawn two ways: as a plain symbol that follows your text color, or as a color emoji. When you paste one, the app makes the choice. Unicode lets you ask for a style with an invisible character placed right after it: U+FE0E asks for text, and U+FE0F asks for emoji.

The Unicode emoji standard also says that presentation style is never guaranteed, so an app or a font may ignore the request. In the picker, the Text style option adds U+FE0E to symbols that have an emoji form. The table shows six characters three ways, and what you see is how your device draws them.

Use cases

What people use copied symbols for

Bios, captions and usernames

Add a heart, star or divider to a profile line or a caption. Each app decides which characters it accepts, so look at the preview before you save.

Documents and slides

Drop in a degree sign, a check mark, an arrow or a fraction without digging through a menu. They paste as ordinary text, and the online notepad can keep a draft in your browser.

Lists and dividers

Use check marks, bullets, arrows or box-drawing lines to make a plain-text list or a simple table in an email or a notes app.

Math and science notes

Copy the signs for less than or equal, not equal, square root, sum and pi, plus superscript and subscript digits. For raised and lowered letters, use the superscript generator.

Web design and code

Copy the HTML entity, CSS escape or JavaScript escape when you need a symbol inside markup, a stylesheet or a script instead of the character itself.

Keyboard shortcuts and guides

Write the command and option key symbols, or the return symbol, in a how-to guide so Mac shortcuts look like the keys. They sit in the Keyboard category.

Good to know

Things worth knowing about symbols

A few details explain most surprises. To restyle whole words rather than pick single symbols, try the tiny text generator.

  • Symbols are text, not pictures

Each one is a Unicode character, so it can be selected, searched and resized like a letter. How it looks depends on the font your device uses.

  • Boxes mean a missing glyph

When a font has no picture for a character, a device may show an empty box or the code instead. The Hide unsupported option tries to keep those out of view.

  • Plain symbol or emoji

Some symbols, such as the heart, also exist as color emoji. Text style adds U+FE0E to ask for the plain version, but an app may ignore it.

  • Names and codes are official

Names come from the Unicode Character Database. The code, such as U+2665, is how charts and programs refer to the same character.

  • Invisible characters are real

Spaces, zero width characters and fillers are in the Spaces category. They draw nothing you can see, so the picker shows them by their short name or code.

  • Nothing goes to a server

Your recent symbols and two option settings are saved in this browser only. The tray is never saved, and nothing you click or type is uploaded.

Limits

What this symbol picker does not do

Looks differ by device

Fonts on each device draw the symbols, so one character can look different on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone, and a few rarer ones may not be drawn at all. The device check here is best effort: it compares each symbol with a missing-glyph box, so a browser that shows a code or another kind of box may let some through, and it only knows the device you are using. Unicode explains how unsupported characters are shown.

A hand-picked list, not all of Unicode

The picker holds 1,561 symbols in 22 categories. Color emoji, flags, logos and private-use characters are left out. The tray holds 5,000 characters, and a search shows the first 300 matches.

Need one that is not here?

On Windows press the Windows key and period, then choose Symbols (Microsoft Support). On a Mac choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols to open the Character Viewer (Apple Support).

FAQ

Copy and paste symbols FAQ

Short answers to what people ask most.

How do I copy and paste symbols?

Click a symbol in the picker and it is copied right away. Paste it where you want it with Ctrl+V on Windows or Cmd+V on a Mac, or touch and hold in a text field on a phone and choose Paste.

How do I copy several symbols at once?

Every click also adds the symbol to the tray. Click as many as you like, edit the tray if you want, then press Copy tray. You can type your own text in the tray between the symbols.

How do I find a symbol by name or code?

Type a word such as heart or arrow in the search box, a code such as U+2665, or an HTML entity. You can also paste a symbol into the search box to see its official name and code.

Why does a symbol show as an empty box?

The font on your device has no picture for that character, so it shows a box or its code instead. Leave Hide unsupported on and the picker tries to leave out symbols your device cannot draw, but the check is best effort and a few may still get through. The device where you paste may still draw it correctly.

Why did my heart turn into an emoji?

Some characters, such as the heart, can be drawn as a plain symbol or as a color emoji, and the app you paste into makes the choice. Turn on Text style to add the invisible U+FE0E, which asks for the plain version. Unicode says presentation is never guaranteed, so some apps ignore it.

What are the Unicode code and HTML entity for?

The code, such as U+2665, names the character in charts and in programs. An HTML entity writes the symbol inside a web page, either as a name or as a number, and CSS and JavaScript each have their own escape. Click any of them in the panel to copy it.

What is the difference between a symbol and an emoji?

A symbol here is a text character that your device draws with a font, so it follows the text size and usually the text color. Emoji are pictographs that are typically drawn in a colorful cartoon style. The picker leaves out characters that exist only as color emoji.

Will these symbols work in every app?

Most apps accept Unicode text, but each app decides which characters it allows, and some usernames, file names and password fields restrict them. Fonts differ too, so check the preview in the place where you paste.

How do I type a symbol with the keyboard?

On Windows press the Windows key and the period key, then choose Symbols. On a Mac choose Edit and then Emoji and Symbols. Alt codes also work on Windows if your keyboard has a numeric keypad.

Is anything I copy uploaded or saved?

No. The picker runs in your browser and nothing you click or type is sent to a server. Your recent symbols and two option settings are kept on your own device only, and the tray is never saved.

Does this include every Unicode character?

No. It lists 1,561 hand-picked symbols in 22 categories, each with its official Unicode name. Color emoji, flags, logos and private-use characters are left out on purpose.
