The basics

What is lowercase?

Lowercase letters are the small forms: a, b and c instead of A, B and C. Converting to lowercase turns every capital letter in your text into its small form, which helps when text arrives in all caps or in mixed case.

Lowercase is the opposite of uppercase. People who search for caps to lowercase or capital letters to lowercase usually mean text that was typed with Caps Lock on.

Lowercase is not the same as sentence case. Lowercase makes every letter small, including the first letter of each sentence, while sentence case capitalizes the start of each sentence again.

Use cases

When to use lowercase

Lowercase is the safe default whenever capital letters would cause trouble.

Fixing Caps Lock mistakes

Turn a paragraph typed in all caps into plain lowercase, then use Sentence case if you want proper sentences back.

URLs, slugs and file names

Lowercase keeps web addresses and file names consistent. Add hyphens with the kebab-case option in the main case converter.

Hashtags and tags

Tags and usernames are easier to match and compare when they are all lowercase.

Comparing and cleaning data

Lowercase two lists before you compare them, so entries such as Paris and PARIS match.

Good to know

Tips for using lowercase

A few things to check before you use lowercase text.

  • Names and acronyms lose their capitals

Lowercase changes every letter, so NASA or London become nasa and london. Use Sentence case or fix them by hand.

  • All caps to proper sentences in one click

The Sentence case button lowercases the text and then capitalizes the start of each sentence, so you do not need two steps.

  • Spaces stay as they are

Lowercase does not add hyphens or underscores. For URL-ready text, use kebab-case or snake_case in the main case converter.

FAQ

Lowercase converter FAQ

Short answers to what people ask most about converting text to lowercase.

How do I change capital letters to lowercase?

Paste your text into the box and click lower case. Every capital letter, including text typed with Caps Lock on, is converted to lowercase at once.

How do I convert caps to lowercase and then capitalize sentences?

Click Sentence case. It makes the whole text lowercase first and then capitalizes the start of each sentence and the word I, so one click does both.

What happens to numbers, punctuation and emoji?

They stay exactly as you typed them. Only letters change case, so numbers, symbols, punctuation and emoji pass through untouched.

Does the lowercase converter work with accents and other languages?

Yes for scripts that have capital letters, such as accented Latin, Greek and Cyrillic: CAFÉ becomes café. Scripts without capitals, such as Chinese, Japanese or Arabic, stay unchanged. Language-specific rules, such as the Turkish dotted and dotless i, follow your browser default.

How do I convert lowercase to uppercase?

Click UPPER CASE in the converter, or use the uppercase converter. Your original text stays in the input box either way.

Is my text saved or shared?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using JavaScript, so your text is not sent to a server or stored anywhere.
