The basics

What is title case?

Title case capitalizes the first letter of the important words in a title and keeps small words lowercase. “The Lord of the Rings” is title case: Lord and Rings are capitalized, while of and the stay lowercase in the middle.

Which small words stay lowercase depends on the style guide. AP, APA, Chicago and MLA agree on the first and last word and on articles, but they differ on prepositions and a few conjunctions. This converter applies the guide you choose and tells you the reason for every word.

Need the other format? Use the sentence case converter to capitalize only the first word, or the case converter for developer formats such as camelCase.

Use cases

When to use a title case converter

It saves the most time on long lists and on titles that must follow a style guide.

Blog posts and videos

Headlines and video titles look consistent when every one follows the same style.

Papers and reference lists

Check APA headings, MLA works-cited titles and Chicago notes against the rules of your guide.

Books, films and songs

Titles of works are normally written in title case, so one rule keeps a whole list uniform.

Slides and email subjects

Short titles and subject lines read cleaner when the small words are lowercase.

Product and page catalogs

Paste a column of names from a spreadsheet and copy back one title per line.

Fixing ALL CAPS

Turn a shouting title into a readable one, then fix any names with protected terms.

Good to know

What a title case converter cannot know

Title case depends on grammar and on names. These limits explain the few words you may need to flip by hand.

  • Words that change job

Up, off, out and down are prepositions in some titles and adverbs in others (Log In, Set Up). Chicago capitalizes the adverb. The tool cannot read grammar, so click the word to flip it.

  • The word to

To stays lowercase in every style here, including in infinitives. Click it if your editor wants a capital.

  • Names with small words

A name like Ludwig van Beethoven or a brand like eBay depends on the owner. Add it to protected terms and it keeps exactly the form you typed.

  • Colons and dashes

The first word after a colon, a dash or the end of a sentence is always capitalized, as the style guides require.

  • Paywalled handbooks

APA and Chicago publish their rules online. The AP Stylebook and MLA Handbook are paywalled, so those two styles follow their widely reported rules, cross-checked in several sources. Confirm against your edition when it matters.

  • Always proofread

Title case is a rule, not an editor. Skim the highlighted words before you publish.

In other apps

Title case in Word, Google Docs and Excel

Your office apps have a title case button, but none of them asks which style guide you follow.

Microsoft Word

Change case, Capitalize Each Word, capitalizes the first letter of every word, including a, of and the. It cannot follow a style guide. See the Microsoft guide.

Google Docs

Format, Text, Capitalization, Title Case applies one fixed rule and has no choice of style guide. Paste the title here when you need AP, APA, Chicago or MLA.

Excel and Google Sheets

The formula =PROPER(A1) capitalizes every word and also capitalizes the letter after an apostrophe, so it turns don’t into Don’T. Paste the column here instead.

FAQ

Title case converter FAQ

Short answers to what people ask most about title case.

What is a title case converter?

A title case converter capitalizes the important words in a title and keeps small words such as a, the, and and of in lowercase. This one follows AP, APA, Chicago or MLA rules, lets you override any word, and runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I convert text to title case?

Pick a style, then paste your title into the box. The result appears instantly. Click Copy result or download it as a .txt file. For many titles at once, put one title on each line.

Which words should not be capitalized in a title?

Articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions such as and, but and or, and short prepositions such as at, by, in, of and on are lowercase in the middle of a title in all four styles. The first and last words are always capitalized.

What is the difference between AP, APA, Chicago and MLA title case?

They differ mainly on prepositions and a few conjunctions. AP and APA capitalize any word of four letters or more. Chicago 18 capitalizes prepositions of five letters or more. MLA lowercases every preposition. The Where the styles disagree panel shows this for your own text.

Is from capitalized in a title?

It depends on the style. AP and APA capitalize from because it has four letters. Chicago 18 and MLA lowercase it because it is a short preposition. The converter shows both results side by side.

Does Chicago style capitalize prepositions?

Since the 18th edition, Chicago capitalizes prepositions of more than four letters, such as between and through, and lowercases shorter ones. Earlier editions lowercased every preposition. Chicago also capitalizes a preposition that is used as an adverb or adjective.

Can I change a word the converter got wrong?

Yes. Click any word in the result to flip its capital letter, and the tool remembers the choice while you edit. Use Undo my word edits to go back. Hover a word to read the reason for the automatic result.

How does bulk title case conversion work?

Put one title on each line. Every line is converted on its own, so the first and last word rules apply to each title. The copied result keeps one title per line.

How do I keep brand names and acronyms capitalized?

The tool keeps a built-in list of common acronyms and names, words with inner capitals such as iPhone, and lone ALL-CAPS acronyms in mixed-case text. Add anything else to Protected terms. The list is saved in your browser only.

Is my text uploaded or saved?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so your titles are not sent to a server. Only your protected terms and chosen style are saved, and they stay in this browser. There is no account and no character limit.
