The basics

What is uppercase?

Uppercase means capital letters: A, B and C instead of a, b and c. Text written in uppercase is also called all caps. An uppercase converter changes every lowercase letter to its capital form and leaves digits, spaces and punctuation alone.

Uppercase, capital letters and all caps describe the same result. Caps Lock is different: it is a keyboard key that makes you type capitals. A converter fixes text after it has been written, so you do not have to retype it.

Small caps is a typographic style, not a different kind of text. It comes from fonts and formatting, so a plain-text converter cannot create it.

Use cases

When to use uppercase

All caps gets attention, so it works best for short text that needs to stand out.

Headings and labels

Short headings, button labels and form field names often use uppercase to stand out. Keep it to a few words.

Warnings and notices

Safety notices, legal disclaimers and status flags such as PAID or URGENT use all caps for emphasis.

Codes and acronyms

Convert a list of country codes, product codes or abbreviations to uppercase so they match a required format.

Constants in code

Constants and environment variables are usually written in uppercase with underscores. The main case converter has a CONSTANT_CASE option for that.

Tips for using uppercase

A few things to check before you publish text in all caps.

  • Use all caps sparingly

Long passages in all caps are generally harder to read, so keep uppercase for short text.

  • Check names and brands

Uppercase changes every letter, so a brand written as iPhone becomes IPHONE.

  • Going back is easy

Your original text stays in the input box. Switch to lower case or Sentence case to see it in another format.

FAQ

Uppercase converter FAQ

Short answers to what people ask most about converting text to uppercase.

How do I convert text to uppercase?

Paste your text into the box and click UPPER CASE. Every letter becomes a capital letter at once. You can then copy the result or download it as a .txt file.

Is there a limit on how much text I can convert?

There is no character limit. Very large documents may take a moment longer on an older device, but the tool will not cut your text off or ask you to upgrade.

Does the uppercase converter work with accents and other languages?

Yes for scripts that have capital letters, such as accented Latin, Greek and Cyrillic: café becomes CAFÉ. Some letters expand when capitalized: the German ß becomes SS. Scripts without capitals, such as Chinese, Japanese or Arabic, stay unchanged.

What is the difference between uppercase and capital letters?

There is no difference: uppercase and capital letters mean the same thing. Title Case is different because it capitalizes only the first letter of major words, which you can do with the Title Case button.

How do I change uppercase back to lowercase?

Click lower case in the converter, or use the lowercase converter. Your original text stays in the input box either way.

Is my text saved or shared?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using JavaScript, so your text is not sent to a server or stored anywhere.
