Make small text you can copy and paste
The Small Text Generator turns normal letters into small caps, superscript and subscript characters. Type your text, copy the version you like, and paste it into a bio, caption, username, message or document. It works with Unicode characters, so no font or app install is needed, and the conversion runs in your browser.
How to use the small text generator
- Type or paste your text in the box. A sample is already there so you can see the styles.
- Each row shows your text in one style. Small caps and superscript cover almost every letter.
- Press Copy next to the style you want.
- Paste it where you need it. Press Clear to start again.
The four small text styles
| Style | Example | Best for | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small caps | Sᴍᴀʟʟ Tᴇxᴛ Gᴇɴᴇʀᴀᴛᴏʀ | Bios, headings, usernames | All letters except x, which has no small capital in Unicode. Capital letters stay normal. |
| All small caps | ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴛᴇxᴛ ɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀᴛᴏʀ | A fully small-capital look | Every letter except x. |
| Superscript | ˢᵐᵃˡˡ ᵀᵉˣᵗ ᴳᵉⁿᵉʳᵃᵗᵒʳ | Exponents, footnotes, tiny labels | All 26 letters and the digits 0 to 9. The letter q uses a look-alike character. |
| Subscript | Sₘₐₗₗ Tₑₓₜ Gₑₙₑᵣₐₜₒᵣ | Chemical formulas and maths | 17 lowercase letters and the digits 0 to 9, so some letters stay normal. |
Need only superscripts? Use the Superscript Generator. For more decorative styles, try the Fancy Text Generator.
Small text is not a font size
These are separate Unicode characters, not normal letters shrunk by formatting. That has three effects:
- You can paste them anywhere text is accepted, including places with no formatting options.
- Search and spell-check may not recognise them as normal words, so avoid them in page titles, headings and anything you want people to find in search.
- Appearance depends on the font. Two apps can draw the same character slightly differently.
If you need real smaller text in a document or web page, use the font size or superscript formatting tools there instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is small text?
Small text is made from Unicode characters that look like smaller versions of normal letters, such as small capitals, superscripts and subscripts. It is not a font size change, which is why you can paste it into places that do not support formatting.
How do I use small text in a bio or caption?
Type your text in the box, press Copy next to the style you like, and paste it into the bio, caption, username field or message. Apps that accept ordinary pasted text usually accept these characters, but check the result before you publish.
Why do some letters stay normal size?
Unicode does not contain a small version of every letter in every style. Small caps has no small X, and subscript has only 17 letters (a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x). The tool leaves the missing characters unchanged and tells you how many were skipped.
Will small text show on every device?
On current phones and computers it usually does. Older devices or limited fonts may show empty boxes instead of some characters. Test it on the device and app where you plan to post.
Is small text accessible?
Not always. Screen readers may read each special character by name or skip it, so avoid small text for anything important such as contact details, prices or instructions.
What is the difference between small caps, superscript and subscript?
Small caps looks like capital letters at x-height. Superscript sits above the baseline and is used for exponents, footnotes and ordinals. Subscript sits below the baseline and is used in chemical formulas such as H2O.
